JPIAMR-AMR Interventions 2024

The Regional Foundation for Biomedical Research is pleased to announce the launch of the new call on the topic “AMR Interventions 2024 - Interventions moving forward to promote action to counteract the emergence and spread of bacterial and fungal resistance and to improve treatments”.

The total estimated budget for the initiative is more than €19 million and its primary objective is to create and strengthen collaboration between research partners from different countries and fields of expertise to promote interventional research on antimicrobial resistance.

The Regional Foundation for Biomedical Research participates in the call with a budget of € 1,500,000.00. The budget per project may not exceed € 500,000.00.

 Topics of the call:

Project proposals must cover only one of the following topics:

1. Theme 1: Develop new or improved measures that prevent, mitigate and/or treat treatment-resistant fungal infections and/or those at risk of developing resistance.

This may include, but is not limited to, prevention strategies, treatments based on new or existing compounds or technologies, improved or new diagnostic or surveillance techniques.

2. Topic 2: Improve and/or compare and/or evaluate strategies, technologies, treatments, methods, protocols or methodologies of data collection based on existing interventionswith the aim of preventing or reducing the emergence or spread of antibacterial or antifungal resistance or treating infections caused by resistant bacteria/fungi and recommending new policies. 

Projects submitted under this theme should address one or more of the following sub-themes:

1.  Improve and/or compare and/or evaluate the effectiveness of existing measures (e.g., cost-effectiveness, clinical utility, socioeconomic adaptability, emergency reduction, spread,

transmission, treatment, etc.);

2. Identify barriers to uptake, including the factors that lead to the success or failure of previous pilot interventions and, where applicable, devise solutions to overcome them.

The prevention and/or mitigation measures proposed under Theme nr. 2 may include, but is not limited to:

1. Treatments;

2. protocols;

3. social and behavioural interventions (e.g. public awareness campaigns, infection prevention and control programmes, etc.);

4. drafting of guidelines (e.g. antimicrobial or vaccine guidelines).

These interventions can use technological, digital, or AI-based approaches.

For all Themes, the reuse and/or improvement of the quality and sustainability of existing data is encouraged.

 Sub-themes excluded from the Call:

The following sub-themes are not included in the scope of the call:

1. antivirals and antiparasitics;

2. project proposals aimed exclusively at treating plant or animal infections with no connection to human health;

3. project proposals aimed exclusively at extending existing surveillance systems or implementing new ones.

One Health Settings:

The call covers the following "One Health Settings":

1. Human Health

2. Animal Health

3. Plants

4. Environment

Due to  FRRB  's mission, Lombardy entities requesting funds from FRRB will be called upon to focus solely and exclusively on the "Human Health" area.

General Eligibility Criteria:

Project proposals can be submitted by Consortia that comply with the following eligibility rules:

1. Each consortium must include  at least 3 project partners applying for funding from 3 different eligible countries (including at least 2 EU Member States or associated countries).

2. The single consortium may include  a maximum of 6 project partners  and a maximum of 2 partners from the same country per project proposal. However, it is possible to involve a seventh partner if:

1.  at least 1 project partner is from an under-represented country or

2. at least 1 project partner has  the Principal Investigator who meets the definition of researcher at the beginning of his or her career or

3. The Consortium includes one company.

 Partner search tool

A  match-making platform will be made available from 10 January. This tool can be used both to search for a partner with whom to develop a project and to search for a partner who supports an existing project proposal. 

Informational Webinar:

On  24 January 2024, the Call Secretariat will organize a webinar for potential participants during which both the call and the partner search tool will be presented and it will be possible to ask questions to the representatives of the funding bodies.

Pre-eligibility

FRRB performs a pre-eligibility check for institutions applying for funds under the JPIAMR JTC 2024. The documents for pre-eligibility can be downloaded on this page, in the "documents to be downloaded" section. The pre-eligibility form must be sent to the email address progetti@frrb.it at least 10 working days before sending the pre-proposal.

FRRB also provides a template for drawing up the budget ("Budget tool"). The budget tool is designed as a support tool for internal use by applicants that is not required to be sent to FRRB and does not have to be attached to the application.

Definition of Research Centre/Institute

For the purposes of this call, a "research organization" is defined as any entity that has all of the following characteristics:
a) to include, among the main social purposes of its Statute, the purpose of research and the dissemination of scientific knowledge; b) carry out mainly and continuously independent research and dissemination of scientific knowledge; c) be equipped with stable structures, environments, premises and/or laboratories and instruments suitable for carrying out research activities;
d) employ qualified and appropriate personnel for the research activity; (e) not to include among its activities the funding of research through competitive tenders.
